Increased market opportunities with GRX
Derek Moser, Comfone’s Product Manager for GRX, confirms that operators’ interest for Comfone’s GRX is increasing. “The number of Comfone GRX customers is growing rapidly. Over the last 12 months we have doubled our GRX customer base and the growth rate is speeding up. We are enormously happy with this development and we are pursuing this promising path, providing our customers with a secure and flexibly accessible GRX at a fair price.” Regional concerns also need to be taken into consideration when offering a GRX service. In regions like South America for example, the leased lines needed for data traffic are very expensive and mobile operators are keen on finding other, more cost-effective solutions. Instead of organising expensive leased lines, mobile operators can simply route their data traffic to a data centre or PoP and gain access to Comfone’s GRX, thereby being able to easily access data services and make significant financial savings. With the increase of data traffic and looking towards the development of the IP interconnect and interworking world, GRX is a future-orientated and state-of-the-art service simplifying challenges of data transmission for customers.

Alongside the increasing mobile customer demand for data roaming, the need for a stable, secure GPRS Roaming eXchange (GRX) is growing proportionally. GRX is the simple and easily implemented solution enabling the transmission of data traffic between different GPRS/3G mobile operators through one single network connection to the GRX. By connecting their network to a GRX, mobile operators eliminate the necessity of establishing individual data traffic transmissions with all other GPRS operators.
Early in 2010 Comfone launched an inter-disciplinary internal team to work on a Data Roaming solution field trial with several major mobile network operators in Europe and Africa. The field trial was the opportunity for Comfone to test the Data Roaming solution it had developed over the past months in response to the increasing number of Key2roam members asking for a reliable, robust and yet easy-to-implement solution to increase their data roaming footprint.
Markus Bigler, Senior Product Manager, Key2roam, explained that a field trial is an integral and important step in Comfone’s development process for new solutions and services. “Comfone developed more than just a technical platform for an operator network, we developed a complete solution. Therefore we needed to trial both the technical performance of our Data Roaming solution on Key2roam in an end-to-end scenario as well as the internal implementation of Comfone’s complete process for Data Roaming. We wanted to know if our custumer documentation, implementation procedures, reporting tools as well as the operational processes for our support engineers would all stand up to our high standards of quality and they did. The outcome of the trial exceeded our expectations and we received very positive feedback from our trial partners who were also very pleased with the results.”
Data Roaming Field Trial Manager, Stefan Renfer, added that, “The integration of Data Roaming on Key2roam into our operative processes was very smooth and the field trial confirmed that our approach to the development of new, market-orientated solutions is successful. During the trial we were able to work with the participating operators to further optimise some technical and process issues. Their feedback helped Comfone ensure that our Data Roaming solution reflects actual market requirements and completely fulfils our customers' needs.”
