We are proud to welcome Mathias Prüssing as Comfone’s new CEO. He will be taking over from Oscar Derrer and assumes full responsibility for the running of Comfone as from May 1st.
Mathias Prüssing brings a wealth of leadership skills and experience to Comfone. An Attorney of Law, he has a degree in Law and Economics as well as an Executive MBA in General Management. His experience within the field of telecommunications includes most recently his role as CEO of Infonet Switzerland and his position as Head of Corporate Development for Swisscom Solutions, an entity of Swisscom AG.
“It is a great pleasure to introduce myself to Comfone’s many loyal customers. I want to assure you I will continue to focus on serving our customers, to work with you, not just for you, and to ensure that we deliver high quality services and quick responsiveness to customer problems. Together with my colleagues, the experts within Comfone, I intend to develop Comfone’s product portfolio to meet customer requirements for the future. My vision is to position Comfone as your reliable partner in the telecommunications market, as a one-stop provider of seamless communication solutions supporting the roaming and interworking requirements of operators and service providers around the world. I look forward to working with you!”. Mathias Prüssing, CEO, Comfone AG
Oscar Derrer, Comfone’s CEO for several years, will continue working for Comfone in his new position as Executive Vice President. He will concentrate his activities in the area of customer relations, where he will further develop and deepen Comfone’s customer relationships.
One of Mathias's first tasks at Comfone was to appoint and welcome Daniel Heutschi as Comfone’s Executive Vice President, Products & Marketing. Daniel joined Comfone in 2004 and most recently, as Senior Product Manager, has been responsible for the development and growth of Comfone’s trendsetting Key2roam service.
In his new role Daniel Heutschi is to lead Comfone’s Products & Marketing department in its tasks of market analysis, product management, strategic marketing and business planning.
“The telecoms industry is undergoing rapid change and we at Comfone have been preparing for this over the last ten years. We’ve been developing our GSM and WLAN roaming hubs and now offer integrated solutions to meet the roaming and interworking needs of today’s operators around the world.” Daniel Heutschi, Executive Vice President, Products & Marketing, Comfone AG
Hub solutions to address today’s roaming challenges
Comfone has combined some of the most popular elements of our existing service portfolio to make up our new integrated hub service, a solution which includes hub services for GSM, SMS, GRX/IPX, MMS, 3G-4G, WLAN and WiMAX.
Comfone’s association with roaming hubs is not new. We have been developing commercial international roaming platforms since the company’s founding in 1997, preparing to address the demands of today’s market. One of the first and most successful of our service portfolio was Comfone's Global Cellular Service (GCS), a service which has established more than 3500 roaming connections over the past ten years. Now Comfone offers a complete range of hubs for all standards of roaming traffic.
Benefit from Comfone Hub Services:
quickly achieve a global roaming footprint through one agreement and one signalling connection
add new roaming partners and services at minimal cost
outsource administration and maintenance of today’s complex international roaming and interworking relations
simplify implementation and testing procedures
increase efficiency and profitability of roaming business
utilise established migration processes for bilateral to hub-based relations
“As market requirements evolve there is an ever growing demand for simpler and more efficient procedures for roaming. It is my belief that SS7 and IP hubs will ultimately merge together and become an integrated hub. We at Comfone are preparing now to meet the demands of tomorrow’s mobile operators today.” Heiner Brandenberger, Senior Product Manager and Vice President for Business Development, Comfone
Last week, Comfone attended the ‘Roaming World Congress’ in Vienna, Austria, where our Hub Services received much interest. Heiner Brandenberger, Comfone Senior Product Manager and Vice President for Business Development, spoke at the conference presenting Comfone’s views on “Migrating from a bilateral framework to a hub-based roaming” to the delegate audience.
Comfone’s Key2roam® footprint enjoys extensive growth in Latin America
Comfone, the telecom market’s most experienced hub solution provider, has seen further growth, especially in Latin America.
“We are happy with the success and acceptance operators throughout South and Central America and the Caribbean have shown for Comfone’s Key2roam hub solution. It has been a great first quarter of 2008 for us here at Comfone’s regional office in Rio de Janiero and we are confident that our business prospects will continue as positively for the remainder of the year.” Felipe Garcia, Vice President Sales Latin America, Comfone AG.
The Key2roam community continues to profit from rapid growth as new operators join from every corner of the world. Since the start of this year nearly 40 networks have joined Comfone’s hub roaming solution, giving a total of over 130 signed Key2roam network members.
Latin America has a huge potential for growth in the roaming field, a fact that can be supported by Comfone’s activity in the region in recent months. Since the beginning of the year we have signed Key2roam agreements with more than 20 networks from the area, making a total of more than 25 member networks in Latin America alone. Some operators signed this year have brought new countries to add to the Key2roam member list, such as Nucleo S.A from Paraguay and ANTEL from Uruguay, while others join as a country’s second Key2roam member. Digicel Group, together with all their subsidiaries and affiliates throughout Central America and the Caribbean, is one of the recent operators to join Key2roam.
Through one agreement, one contact and one set of tests, Comfone Key2roam offers the most extensive roaming footprint currently available in the market. Since 2004 Comfone experts have been developing and improving our hub roaming platform – a pioneering solution in the roaming world – and we would like to thank our customers for their confidence in Comfone and our services.

Learn about WeRoam Comfone’s WLAN roaming hub
You may have read about Comfone’s WeRoam service recently. In previous months our Sales and Product Marketing teams have not only won new customers and widened our hotspot footprint, but have also participated in a live demonstration of dual technology roaming of Wi-Fi and Mobile WiMAX™ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This took place just after Comfone became a member of the WiMAX Forum® in February, showing our commitment to supporting the setting of standards for WiMAX roaming.
Indeed, market demand for public Wireless LAN roaming is undergoing constant growth. The launch of the Wi-Fi enabled handsets such as the Apple IPhone has put WLAN back in the spotlight and given demand for WLAN access a further boost. Similar to the development of mobile phone services, subscribers are now expecting to be able to use WLAN to connect to the Internet from their business destination.
WeRoam, Comfone’s Wireless IP roaming services, offers a worldwide Public WLAN aggregation service. WeRoam’s open roaming platform currently connects over 60 WISPs and offers an aggregated footprint of more than 35’000 hotspots in 63 countries, including premium locations such as major airports, hotel chains and other high value spots. WeRoam is the only open roaming platform supporting username/password and SIM based authentication for WLAN roaming. WeRoam is a key component in Comfone’s roaming hub portfolio, making it the only player on the market that can offer GSM, WLAN, and in the future WiMAX roaming, from a single source.
The solution
enables access to an aggregated public WiFi network, currently covering more than 35’000 hotspots globally, all through one single contract with Comfone
actively manages, implements and operates WLAN roaming agreements to increase WeRoam’s hotspot footprint and drive traffic on those hotspots
enables central hosting of web login page
supports username/password and SIM based authentication for WLAN roaming
carries out data and financial clearing and produces multistandard usage reports
takes over financial liability for the roaming traffic
enables remote testing of hotspots to facilitate implementation and end-to-end tests
provides a Hotspot Directory web portal for effective communication of the location of all hotspots to subscribers
Why choose Comfone? Operators select Comfone based on WeRoam’s reputation as market leader in providing services for WLAN roaming. Also, very importantly, Comfone is a wholesale provider of WLAN roaming services only. This means we never compete with our customers as we do not retail to subscribers.
